Mehndi (or henna painting) in India is a very important part of the wedding ritual and ceremony. As the story goes, the deeper the color obtained on the skin, the longer the love between the couple will last; hence the belief that a proper mehndi application is tantamount to a prayer to the gods for everlasting love and a successful marriage.

I wonder if Indians traveling to Nigeria carried this tradition over to the Muslims who practice this.

(the-goddamazon) Actually, the henna plant grows naturally from India, through the Middle East, and into North Africa! There are different traditions for each area of usage (from cosmetic, to marriage ceremonies, to acts with religious connotations,) and most of these places developed those uses independently! If you’ve only seen Indian style patterns, try taking a look at North African styles, etc. It’s really interesting to see how culture and region effects how henna is applied!
